The Public Health Aerobiology Lab (PHABLab) is part of the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health in the University of Maryland School of Public Health and is led by Professor Don Milton, Associate Research Professor Kate McPhaul, and Assistant Professor Kristen K. Coleman. Our research focuses on understanding airborne transmission and environmental determinants of transmission of respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2 and influenza. The long-term goal is to improve infection prevention and control for healthcare workers, patients, and our whole communities. We aim to show how we protect everyone against pandemic viruses without stifling our economy or burdening disadvantaged groups with greater risk.
Key Research Areas include:
– Airborne Infection Transmission: Investigating how viruses spread through aerosols emitted during activities like breathing, talking, and singing.
– Influenza Environmental Epidemiology: Studying how the indoor environment influences transmission of influenza and how to make indoor environments resistant to spread.
– Germicidal Ultraviolet Light (GUV): Exploring the use of GUV technology to disinfect airborne pathogens, promote clean indoor air, prevent the spread of infections, and enhance effective communication about its safety and benefits.
– Exhaled Biomarkers: Using non-invasive techniques to monitor biological markers in exhaled breath for detecting infections and lung diseases.
This project is funded by the Balvi Filanthropic Fund.
Meet Our Team

Kathleen McPhaul
Associate Research Professor, Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health
Dr. McPhaul is an occupational and public health researcher, educator, and advocate. She is the principal investigator of the Indoor Air, Human Health, and Germicidal UV (GUV) study which evaluates public health communication methods regarding GUV and airborne infections. She is a co-investigator of the EMIT-2 and CRIPT (GotFluToo?) studies, and she teaches occupational health to undergraduate and graduate students.

Cynthia Baur
Endowed Chair and Director, Horowitz Center for Health Literacy
Cynthia Baur, PhD, is a health literacy and health communication expert focused on improving health literacy at the individual, family, community and organizational levels. She directs the University of Maryland Horowitz Center for Health Literacy, the nation’s first academic health literacy center, and is a professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health. In 2022, Dr. Baur and other advocates worked with Maryland Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk, who sponsored Maryland HB1082, to designate the Horowitz Center as the state’s consumer health information hub. Dr. Baur is the Principal Investigator on multiple federal and state funded projects on health literacy, clear communication, digital health, diabetes prevention and organizational health literacy improvement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center provided communications support to Maryland local health departments and coalitions, and pre and post-pandemic, the Center supports the Maryland Department of Health and local health departments on the state’s diabetes action plan. Dr. Baur provides training and expert advice to local, state and national committees and initiatives. Before coming to UMD, she served for almost 20 years in the federal Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She was CDC’s Plain Language and Health Literacy Lead from 2011 to 2016.

Isabel Sierra Maldonado
Project Manager
Isabel earned a Master of Health Administration degree from UMD-SPH in 2020. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Virginia. She has done work in population-based studies of the usage of Lynch syndrome screening for colorectal cancer.

Sulakkhana De Saram
Jr. Project Manager
Sulakkhana received her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health Sciences and her Master of Public Health in Evironmental Health Sciences from UMD-SPH. When she was an undergraduate, she participated in the Prometheus@UMD study as a research assistant. She is currently assisting in project planning and study operations for EMIT-2, CRIPT (GotFluToo?) and other PHAB Lab projects.

Ning Xu
Research Analyst
Ning Xu is a Research Analyst at the Public Health AeroBiology Laboratory (PHAB Lab), where she applies data-driven methodologies to support research in public health and aerobiology. She holds a Master of Information Systems from the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business and is currently helping with website development for the GUV HUB and data visualization and analysis for CRIPT (GotFluToo?) studies.
Young Yun
PhD Student
Young is a PhD student in the PHAB Lab at the School of Public Health, University of Maryland. She earned her MPH from Seoul National University and an MPP from the KDI School of Public Policy and Management.
